Rachel Platten has gone from a local singer/songwriter in New York who performed at gigs just 53 steps from her apartment to a headlining musician performing all over the nation. She also wrote the theme song for a show that can be heard every week on ABC Family's "Jane By Design". She returns to Jammin Java to headline in her very own nation wide tour called 53 steps with the talented Madi Diaz opening the show for her.
This is the forth time seeing Rachel perform live. I've seen her stage presence and performance grow over the past couple of years. I remember the first time she performed at Jammin Java where she opened for Mikey Wax. I was like one of less than a dozen people at that show. Each time I came back to see her perform, she would gather more new fans to come to her shows. It wasn't until she started headlining her show back in February of this year that I can see how much more well known she is. For this show, it was possibly a sold out show or very close to it. It is so great to see growth of an artist you support and follow. To read the blog to her previous shows at Jammin Java filled with video and pictures, see below.

Attending this show wasn't just to see Rachel, but also to see Madi Diaz perform for the very first time live. I was supposed to see her last time she performed at Jammin Java, but something came up, so I couldn't make it. This time, I made sure I came to see her perform. It was like a two for one show. I also keep hearing great things from singer/songwriter Amanda Lee about how great Madi is live. So, it was a no-brainer for me come to this show and see what Madi is all about.
Several hours before the show, a tweet went out about the show and it was nearly sold out. There was only twenty tickets left. Since it was a near sell out show, I got there relatively early. I got there a little bit after 6pm after leaving work and there was already a small group of people standing in line in the front lobby. I decided to stand in line too. I peaked through the blinds to see how the seating arrangement was like and realized there weren't any chairs or tables, so it looks like there was a last minute decision to change the seated show into a standing show.
Doors opened around 7pm and I rushed in to find the best angle to video record the show. I decided to set-up on the front left side of the room to get the best view of the whole stage. After setting up, I went over to the merchandise stand and bought myself Rachel's exclusive EP that can only be bought at her 53 Steps tour. Half an hour later, both of my friends finally arrived to also watch the show: Lana (a Digbyholic) and Amanda Lee. We all sat down and talked until the show started.
The show finally starts and every stands to watch Madi Diaz take the stage. Madi performed a total of nine songs, and of which, two were covers. During the first few songs that Madi performed, a few pranks were done to Madi since there's a tradition to prank the opening act for the last show of the tour. They played some random audio. It got a few laughs from both Madi and the crowd. Madi was great on stage. She had an acoustic set. To check out her set at Jammin Java click on the links below or view her opening act in the embedded video further down the blog.
After Madi finished her set, Rachel came out to a roaring cheer from the crowd. She came out with her drummer/percussionist Craig Meyer. Rachel performed a total of thirteen songs and two cover songs. For one of the cover songs, she had Madi come back out on stage to do a incredible and striking collaboration. One of the highlights was when Rachel and Craig had a jingle to promote Rachel's merchandise. Rachel's performance was again just incredible. She had so much energy and so exciting to watch which she plays the keys and sing. When she finished her set, she quickly returned on stage for an encore performance before she leaves the stage. I would have to say this was one of her best shows. I can definitely see her next tour going more world wide. After the show Amanda left early since she a long commute home and wake up early for work the next day. Lana and I started to pack up and stand in line for the meet and greet to meet both Madi and Rachel.Madi's meet and greet was next to the merchandise stand. When it was my turn to get the disc from her album and mini poster signed, I let her know that I was really glad I was able to see her this time around since I was unable to last time. She signed my poster saying it was great to meet me in person this time. I then took a picture with Madi before moving on to the meet and greet line to see Rachel.
As we got closer to meet Rachel, I let Lana go first to get her merchandise signed, and I would take a picture of her and Rachel. As they prepared to take a picture, Rachel sees me with Lana's camera and recognized me right away and hugged me right away. She was really glad to see me since I've been to almost all her shows at Jammin Java since the beginning. I got her exclusive tour EP signed and also had her sign photographs of me and her from the previous two times that I met her. She was really surprised to see those pictures, and thought it was really sweet and thanked me for supporting her since the beginning. I took a picture with her to end my night. I gave her one last hug and left the venue to head home.
It was an eventful show that evening. Thank you Rachel and Madi for coming back to Jammin Java. Come back soon!
